New Hope Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada, which has its national offices in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our Regional church, known as The Christian Church in Georgia , has its offices in Macon, Georgia. Currently, the Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins serves as the General Minister and President of the denomination. The regional minister for the state of Georgia is the Rev. Dr. Ray Miles.
One of the more distinctive qualities of the Disciples is the role of women in the leadership of the church. Both men and women are invited and encouraged to hold any office of the church, including Pastor, Elder, and Deacon. Disciples encourage a spirit of openness and inclusiveness, the evidence of which can be seen in the lively discussions in Sunday School classes and the diversity of opinions among the membership.
Disciples of Christ congregations are autonomous. We call our own ministers, set our own budgets, own our facilities and administer our own programs. All decisions regarding the church's mission are made through the congregation's General Church Board and the congregation. Although autonomous, we are in a covenant relationship with all Disciples churches, and the Regional and General or National offices of our denomination. We voluntarily contribute to and cooperate with the ministries of the Regional and General church whose primary missions is to support the local congregation and provide opportunities for them to engage in worldwide ministries more efficiently.
